創立於1859年，是耶穌會的高等教育機構，也是菲律賓最具聲望的學府之一。原本由西班牙和美國的耶穌會神父經營，現由菲律賓省府接手管理，學校亦設有小學和中學部。至於大學部與研究所則通稱為「羅耀拉學園」，目前學生人數約有一萬名左右，分為四個學院，分別為︰人文、社會科學、工程科學，以及管理學院。自創校以來，以人文學院（由哲學、神學、文學、藝術與語言等學系組成）聞名。
1910年，本校首度將莎劇搬上菲律賓的舞臺，使用英文演出，此後持續推出劃時代的製作，直到二次世界大戰後才告終。1970年代，菲律賓大力推行本土化運動，使得本校無論是社會、政治或是文化氣氛等，都產生轉變。在校長的遴選方面，優先起用菲律賓籍的耶穌會信徒，並且成立校務基金會，把學校的發展當作國家建設的一環。不僅如此，就連校內的劇場也跟著轉型，例如︰莎劇及其他古典劇目的演出，就以翻譯本取代原文，近年也運用本地的表演傳統作為演出的基調，改編經典劇目。以近期推出過的《羅密歐與茱麗葉》為例，演出並沒有完全依照莎劇劇本，而是採用菲律賓的早期詩歌，再加入傳統舞蹈以及傳統音樂的元素，進行改編。這個演出的名稱是《Sintang Dalisay》（或名《純愛》），首演於2011年。除了在國內巡演之外，也受邀參加國際戲劇節，出國巡演。
The Ateneo de Manila University, founded in 1859, is a Jesuit institution of higher learning and one of the most prestigious schools in the Philippines. Initially run by Spanish and American Jesuit priests, the University is now run by the Philippine province, and also includes an elementary and high school departments. The College and Graduate divisions, known as the Loyola Schools, has an enrollment of around 10,000 students and is divided into four Schools: the Humanities, Social Sciences, Science and Engineering and Management. From its inception, the Ateneo de Manila has been strong in the Humanities (Philosophy, Theology, Literature, Languages and the Arts). The University introduced the staging of Shakespeare productions in 1910, and soon after, staged landmark productions of Shakespearean productions in English till after the Second World War.
The Filipinization movement of the 1970s transformed the University’s social, political, and cultural climate, privileging Filipino Jesuits as University Presidents and positioning national development as a University thrust. University theater changed, too, as Shakespeare and other classical works began to be staged in translation, and more recently appropriated using local traditions as the basis of production styles. A recent production of Romeo and Juliet, using a text drawn not from Shakespeare but from an early Filipino poem and deploying traditional dance and music is a prime example of this appropriation. The production, entitled Sintang Dalisay (or Pure Love) staged in 2011, has toured in several Philippine provinces and has been invited to perform in several international theater festivals.

維拉林神父甫就任「馬尼拉雅典耀大學」校長一職，是個信奉耶穌會教派、關心環境議題的物理學家。他的治校理念，最優先的
考量是，進行能夠激發國家建設與愛國情操的計畫。落實的關鍵則是，在菲律賓的文化遺產方面，創造更多的自覺與曝光機會。而傳統表演藝術就是一種表達語彙。因此，他計畫成立藝術與文化中心，如此一來，將能鼓勵學校產出與整合更多不同的創作計畫。
Profile:
Fr. Jose Ramon Villarin, S.J., recently installed as the new President of the Ateneo de Manila University, is a Jesuit physicist with a strong interest in environmental issues. Among his major priorities as President is to undertake projects that inspire nation-building and love of count ry, and central to this effort is to create greater awareness and exposure to aspects of Philippine cultural heritage of which traditional performing arts is one expression. A manifestation of this concern is his plan to build a Center for Arts and Culture which will encourage and coordinate various creative projects in the University.
