Silat: Traditional Filipino Martial Arts as combat Choreography

The workshop is an attempt to translate traditional performing arts practices into theatrical expressions suitable for the contemporary stage.  Its focus will be on a Filipino martial arts tradition called the “silat,” a form also found in Malaysia and Indonesia.  Participants learn the basics of this martial arts form and are expected to improvise on this form to explore the opening fight scene of Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet.” To accomplish this, participants will also be introduced to the “igal,” a traditional dance that captures the movements of the sea.  The fusion of “silat” and “igal” is expected to animate classical western texts and demonstrate one pathway for intercultural theater on the Asian stage.
